Airport Loyalty: Why You Always End Up at the Same Terminal

26 June 2026

Most of your flights probably depart from the same airport. That's not random.

Geography Rules

If you live in Sydney, you fly out of Sydney. That's just logic. Closest airport wins.

If you live in Melbourne, same deal. If you're in Brisbane, you know the pattern.

Geography determines your home airport. It's not loyalty. It's convenience.

But Sometimes It's Not Geography

Some people live in Sydney but consistently fly out of Melbourne. Why would you do that?

Better flight times. Melbourne might have flights to your destination earlier or later than Sydney.

Cheaper fares. Maybe flights from Melbourne are cheaper on average.

Family nearby. Maybe you drive to Melbourne to visit family anyway, so flying from there makes sense.

Specific routes. Maybe there's a direct flight from Melbourne that's not available from your home city.

It's a choice, not geography.

Airport Personality Types

Some people are loyal to their closest airport. They always fly from home. No matter what, that's where they depart.

Some people are willing to drive or catch a train for better options. They'll go to an airport 90 minutes away if the flight is better.

Some people split their departures equally between two or three airports. They're flexible. They go where makes sense for each trip.

The International Gateway

If you fly internationally, you probably depart from Sydney or Melbourne. They have the most international routes.

Brisbane has some international, but not as many options.

Perth has a few, but mostly you're connecting through a major hub.

If you live regional, you either drive to a major airport or you accept limited options.

Your Second and Third Airports

Where do you fly to second most often? That's interesting data. That's not home. That's somewhere important to you.

If your second is Melbourne and you live in Sydney, you've got ties there. Work. Family. Someone. That airport represents something.

Third airport is similar. It's a pattern. It's not random.

The Curious Cases

Some people have flown from every major Australian airport. They're either flexible, adventurous, or they've moved around a lot.

Some people have never flown from their local airport. They always fly from somewhere else. Weird but true.

Some people's airport choices shift year to year. Last year they flew from Sydney. This year they're flying from Melbourne. Life changed.

What It Says

Your airport choice isn't random. It reflects your geography, your choices, and sometimes your life circumstances.

Looking at your three most-used airports tells you where your actual network is. Home. Work. Family. Somewhere important.
