Airport Layover Hacks: Making the Most of Your Connection Time

23 June 2026

Layovers suck. Or they don't. Depends how you approach them.

Short Layovers (1 to 2 Hours)

You've got barely any time. Accept it. Get from one gate to the other. Grab a coffee if you have time. That's it.

Pre-plan this. Look at your airport map before you land. Know which terminal you're leaving from. Make it easy on yourself.

Don't leave the airport. Don't get food you're not sure about. Keep it simple.

Medium Layovers (2 to 4 Hours)

Now you've got some options. You can actually do something.

Shower if you can. Most major airports have shower facilities. Some are free with lounge access, some you pay for. Sydney has them. Melbourne has them. If you're heading into a hot place or out after a long flight, a shower changes everything.

Eat something decent. Not fast food if you can help it. Sydney Terminal 1 has actual good restaurants. Melbourne's international terminal isn't bad. Check what your specific airport has.

If you have lounge access, use it. Way better than sitting in a gate.

Long Layovers (4 Plus Hours)

This is where you have real decisions. Leave the airport or stay?

If you're in Sydney or Melbourne, you can do a quick city tour. Get out, see something, be back in plenty of time.

Sydney Kingsford Smith: 30 minutes to the city. You could grab lunch in the CBD and be back with time to spare.

Melbourne: Similar story. Not far to the city. Could get a coffee and a walk along the Yarra.

Brisbane: City is close. Gold Coast is 45 minutes if you're feeling ambitious.

Perth: Farthest from the city but doable if you're quick.

But honestly, for most long layovers, just stay in the airport. Use the lounge. Work. Read. Relax. It's simpler and less stressful than rushing back.

Airport-Specific Tips

Sydney Terminal 1: Good restaurants, decent duty free, nice bathrooms. Can be chaotic but the facilities are solid.

Melbourne: More spread out. Plan your walking. Food options are decent. T2 is older, T1 and T3 are better.

Brisbane: Smaller airport, generally less chaotic. Good for quick layovers.

Perth: Furthest to everything but modern and clean. Fewer options though.

Tech Hacks

Download offline maps of the airport before you arrive. Google Maps lets you do this. Know where things are.

Find charging stations. Most airports have them now. Charge your phone during your layover.

Download offline content. Movies, books, podcasts. Makes waiting easier.

Use the airport wifi smartly. Updates and downloads are better done there.

Track your flight with the moving map. Genuinely interesting. See where you are as you fly.

The Frequent Flyer Advantage

Lounge access changes everything. Comfortable seat, good food, fast wifi. A four-hour layover in a lounge is fine. Four hours in a gate is torture.

This is one of the genuine benefits of status. If you have it, use it.

The Reality

Most layovers are tolerable, not enjoyable. Manage expectations. Stay comfortable. Keep your stress low. That's the real hack.
